The Victorian Novel
ENGL 227
Spring 2014
Section: 01

"What was I doing here alone in great London? What should I do on the morrow? What prospects had I in life? What friends had I on earth? Whence did I come? Wither should I go? What should I do?" The heroine of Charlotte Brontë's novel, Villette, asks these questions, but all of the great Victorian novels we read in this course implicitly do the same. These are the novels that demonstrate the great power of the form to represent psychologically rich character and complex social worlds. In doing so, Victorian novels represent the development of powerful social norms about courtship and marriage, class and ambition, England and Empire -- an exercise of power inseparable from the pleasures of reading. We will study in detail how the form of the novel creates character and social world, and how reading critically can enhance both our understanding and our enjoyment.
