Once out of print and out of favor, Zora Neale Hurston has become a feminist icon as well as a canonical figure in American and African American literary studies. This course examines Hurston's literary production, paying particular attention to its varying reception at different historical moments. In addition to reading most of her novels, short stories, plays, essays, and articles, we will consider, among other questions, how texts are produced by their times and their interpretive communities. Just how did Hurston go from outcast to icon, and how does her work compare with that of her female contemporaries? |
