This is a basic introduction to globalization and global studies. The course will cover instances of global or world systems from the ancient Chinese, Macedonia, and Persian civilizations, among others, through the history of technologies that made the rise of the modern world system possible, down to the most recent debates of the nature and future course a global realities. The course is meant equally to prepare students for or to supplement other offerings in the University in the study of global history and structures. |

Major Readings:
Charles Lemert, Anthony Elliott, Daniel Chaffee, and Eri Hsu, GLOBALIZATION: A READER (Routledge 2010), which provides selected texts from ancient to postmodern times on the subject, as well as analytic commentaries on the ideas, history, and the sources.

Examinations and Assignments:
A series of short papers, a midterm challenge essay, and a final essay on a topic put by the instructor; plus group work and presentations. |
