This course may be repeated for credit. |
Students will learn South Indian classical music by learning to sing and then applying this knowledge to non-Indian instruments they already play. They can then use their own instruments in recitals of South Indian music and dance. Beginners will be introduced to basic exercises and simple compositions. Advanced students will be introduced to improvisation in addition to different types of compositions in various ragas and talas. Students will form an ensemble that will be encouraged to participate in on- and off-campus performances. |

Traditional compositions and/or exercises are presented orally or in notation. Through practice, students master the assignments from one lesson to the next.

Examinations and Assignments:
Daily practice of lessons, memorization of technical exercises and compositions. In-class final exam will test performance skills. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Must be able to play an instrument of any kind. Undergraduates may take this course up to two times for a letter grade and up to four times for credit towards graduation. |
