This course will examine the dynamic and visually arresting art of seventeenth-century Europe with an emphasis on major figures such as Caravaggio, Bernini, Rembrandt, Rubens, Velázquez, and Vermeer. Painting, sculpture and architecture are studied in relation to broader historical contexts. We will explore topics such as the Baroque as a pan-European sensibility; princely prerogative, papal authority, and the demands of the market; collecting and connoisseurship; studio practice; and illusionistic painting and architecture. In addition to a familiarity with the leading artists of the period, their works and the society within which they produced their works, students will attain a working knowledge of the different media and genres of Baroque art, ability to conduct meaningful art historical analysis, and knowledge of art historical terminology. |
Essential Capabilities:
