Aesthetics
COL 266
Spring 2011
Section: 01
Crosslisting: PHIL 267

What is beauty and by what criteria can we distinguish the beautiful? On what grounds can we assert our aesthetic judgments in the face of disagreement? Are judgments of beauty entirely unlike judgments of fact? Is there any bond between our perception of natural beauty and our experience of works of art? This course addresses major questions in aesthetics through a careful interrogation of both historical and contemporary philosophical texts. We will also make use of specific artworks as illustrative cases for our philosophical inquiry. The specific topic or focus of the course may vary by year.
