The blues poetry of Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker's provocative banana skirt, Zora Neale Hurston's THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD, flappers, jazz and rent parties. All are associated with the Harlem Renaissance. This course will center on the literature created during or concerning this era; writers to be considered include Hughes, Hurston, Nella Larsen, Jean Toomer, James Weldon Johnson and Toni Morrison. We will also explore the visual art, film and music of the period while discussing the politics of representation uplift, sexuality and the body that were a part of the Harlem, or New Negro, Renaissance. |
