Writing Certificate Senior Seminar: The Future of Publishing

WRCT 350
Spring 2013
Section: 01
Certificates: Writing

This seminar will provide a historical overview and contemporary analysis of the publishing business. In the early 21st century, the industry is undergoing several major transitions simultaneously (downsizing, the e-book revolution and other technological developments, etc.), and most people feel that the future is unclear at best. In addition to threatening the livelihood of the business, these changes also provide new opportunities for writers, publishers, editors, and others.
The course will focus specifically on book publishing, but will include research and discussion of other media, including magazine publishing and the plethora of Internet-based media outlets. It will offer perspectives on a range of areas of the publishing business: challenges for writers, the role of editors, agents, and publicists, as well as the production process. it includes lectures, readings, and student exercises, including the formation of editorial boards and a moderated debate about the role of e-books; as well as guest visits by several New York publishing veterans.
