In this course you will read profiles, biographies, and theories of biography and you will begin to work in this genre yourself. Throughout the semester, we will ask: What constitutes evidence of a life? What kinds of research are necessary? What gets left out? How does a writer's relationship to his or her subject inform such a portrait? |

Text studied may include work by Caroline Heilbrun, Lytton Strachey, Gertrude Stein, Edmund Gosse, Richard Holmes, Virginia Woolf, Nell Irwin Painter, Geoff Dyer, Hermione Lee, and others.

Examinations and Assignments:
Assignments will include several short exercises, response papers, and a long profile. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students of all backgrounds are welcome in this course, but students should have taken at least one course in Creative Writing (Techniques, Workshops, or Special Topics, in any genre); or have a comparable background in the study of the history of the novel, in narrative theory, or in historical narrative. To be admitted to this course, please submit a POI request and email lcohen01@wesleyan.edu by Friday November 4, 2011 at 4 p.m. with the following information: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences; 2) a short autobiographical statement (a paragraph) describing your interest in biography and your background in creative writing or how you are otherwise qualified; 3) if you are applying to more than one upper-level creative writing course, you must indicate where this course falls in your order of preference. Please submit this information electronically in a single attachment. Please use either Microsoft Word or rich-text-format. You will be notified electronically of the status of your application by the end of preregistration. Students who have missed this deadline and would still like to apply to the workshop should contact the professor at Lcohen01@wesleyan.edu to inquire if there are still openings.
Meetings with and readings by visiting writers may be an additional element of the course.
This course contributes to the Theory & Literary Forms and Creative Writing concentrations for the English major. |
