This course will introduce students to the possibilities of theater as a tool for community activism by giving them an opportunity to collaborate with residents of a local psychiatric hospital on the creation of theater performances. No previous experience in theater is necessary. Students will experience first-hand the ways in which theater can serve as a catalyst for self-transformation, as part of the recovery process of mentally disabled individuals. The collaborative performances will be inspired by classic literary texts but will include writings generated during the class that undermine society's stigmas related to mental illness. |
