This course introduces students to the history of French cinema (the evolution of its aesthetics as well as of its main themes), from the films of the Lumière brothers in 1895 until now with French filmmakers of Maghrebi origins. One leading question of the course will be: What makes French cinema "French"? |

Carrie Tarr. REFRAMING DIFFERENCE: BEUR AND BANLIEUE FILMMAKING IN FRANCE (Manchester UP, 2005).

Attendance, preparation, and class participation essential.
Written preparation (one page or less) required for each film viewed.
Two short papers ; one final paper.
One oral presentation. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This is a film course which requires the viewing of films outside of class. Films discussed in class will be shown twice in FISK. In addition, each film will be available for viewing in the FISK lab if students are unable to attend one of the official showings. Due to copyright issues, the films will not be made available online.
Readings, written assignments, and class discussions will be in French. |
