Jorge Luis Borges is one of the most well-known writers of the 20th century. His short stories and essays have exerted a significant influence on philosophers, historians, filmmakers, and fiction writers across the globe. In this course, we will examine Borges' literary work, as well as the production of a wide array of cultural critics who have appropriated and discussed his ideas to develop their own intellectual projects. We will pay special attention to the ways in which Borges' conception of literature has played a special role in developing new notions of authorship, fiction, history, and modernity. |

Our goal is to INTERPRET literature as an institution devoted to endorsing, challenging or reconfiguring cultural practices that impact the community. Students are taught how to negotiate INTERCULTURAL boundaries by contrasting, integrating, appropriating and deconstructing literary interventions in their historical contexts.

3 short papers (3-4 pages); 1 oral presentation; 1 final paper (6-8 pages). Readings, discussions and papers in Spanish. |

This course is intended for students who have completed at least SPAN 221 or the equivalent with a B or better. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before pre-registering. Readings, written assignments, and class discussion will be in Spanish. Only COL students may take this course CR/U. |
