What Is History?
HIST 144
Spring 2015 not offered

Certificates: Social, Cultural, and Critical Theory |
All human societies articulate a narrative of their past that provides their/our origin as a people. These, at the same time, can often be contested. Nonetheless, before a particular moment in time, most would not have referred to such understandings as history. In this course, we shall examine the phenomenon that since the writings of the Greeks, Western societies have come to identify as history. We shall engage some of significant interventions, from antiquity to the 19th-century United States, in the ongoing discussion of "what is history?" |
