This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of Japanese TAIKO drumming with an emphasis on improvisation, playing in an ensemble, and listening skills. Students will study various basic traditional and contemporary styles of drumming through rigorous physical practice, culminating in a final performance at the end of the semester. Students will also explore the history of Japanese traditional music as well as issues of gender, ethnicity, and nationality found among practitioners of the art via course readings and audiovisual materials. |
Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy Students will learn Japanese/Asian American cultural expressions through hands-on experience with taiko drumming.
