Neuronal cell biology is an important and fast-moving field. The brain cannot be understood without first elucidating the properties and functions of its component neurons. This course will focus on cell biological studies of the nervous system. We will explore the structure and function of neurons, synapses, and circuits. Using both text books and primary literature, we will examine the basic cell biological mechanisms that underlie the formation, function, and plasticity of neurons and circuits. Areas studied will include polarity, synapse formation, synaptic transmission, inter- and intra-cellular transport, plasticity, and regeneration. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Teaching modality: For Fall 2020 this course will be online only. This will ensure teaching continuity for the semester regardless of any changes occurring over the course of semester. It will also offer the same teaching experience to all students, whether they be on campus, at home or overseas. My class design will accommodate both synchronous and asynchronous learning. This will be advantageous should anyone get sick or quarantined, allowing me to help you catch up and complete the semester successfully. I have developed a flipped classroom model, which will provide pre-class content (videos, readings, etc.) then workshop-type classes with interactive activities in synchronous sessions. This modality will also accommodate completely asynchronous participation for students in different time zones or who may become ill. I feel that I can provide a more personal and more inclusive academic course by teaching in this way. I envision frequent 1-on-1 remote meetings with my students and an online classroom with a good sense of community. I fully expect many students to be on campus, and will help facilitate study groups and use of library and technology resources |
