Understanding the cellular biology of neurons is critical for understanding neurological disorders as well as neuropharmacological methods for treating the nervous system. In this course, we will explore how neurons function, focusing on structure-function relationships of the molecular building blocks of neurons. We will examine the basic cell biological mechanisms that underlie the formation, function, and plasticity of neurons and circuits. Areas studied will include cytoskeleton, cellular polarity, synapse formation, synaptic transmission, inter- and intra-cellular transport, neuronal plasticity, and regeneration.
