Globalization has become a household word since its inception in the 1960s to refer to the greater integrations of the economies and peoples of the world through the expansion of trade and investments, flows of capital, communication technologies, migration, and the creation of new international institutions and organizations. To the peoples of the Third World, however, globalization is nothing new but has been around since the beginning of Western European colonialism and the rise of modern capitalism in the 16th century. This course will offer an overview of several critical perspectives from those who have been the subjects of globalization writ large, including, among others, Eric Williams, Aime Cesaire, Frantz Fanon, Amilcar Cabral, Kwame Nkhruma, Walter Rodney, Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, Vandana Shiva, C. L. R. James, Samir Amin, Fidel Castro, Michael Manley, and Mahmood Mamdani. |
