| Course Cluster: African Studies |
This is not a comprehensive survey of all African art. It focuses in-depth on the art of a limited number of past and present societies in Africa and raises certain broad theoretical problems. The aim is to gain a taste of the formal variety, technical richness, cultural depth, symbolic meaning, historical complexity, and dynamic transformations of sub-Saharan African art. |

Chapters from books as well as articles in African art history and anthropology journals

Examinations and Assignments:
One mid-term exam and one final exam covering material after the mid-term. Essay questions and image identification. At the beginning of some classes there may be a short unannounced quiz comprising one or two slide identifications from material covered in class the previous week. There is also a map assignment. |
