The goal of the course is to develop the skills necessary to create stories and sequential art specifically aimed at young readers. In an industry that welcomes unique voices and styles, there are underlying guidelines that inform children's literature and typically apply to most picture books. The course would cover the creation, style, layout, and pacing of sequential art as well as the structure, content and specific considerations for writing manuscripts for children. In addition to studying the craft of effective storytelling and visual narration, we'll take a look at the business of publishing that will familiarize students with practices in the industry. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Amy Bloom will be taking action on POI requests but is not the instructor for this course. The instructor will be Barbara McClintock.
It's recommended that writers in this class have a basic understanding of plot, character, voice, and theme. Having a love and enjoyment of picture books is a plus for this course
Contributes to fulfillment of ENGL major requirements:
Class of 22: Techniques or Special Topic course or genre-focused course in the CW concentration, Theory and Literary Forms concentration, elective.
Class of 23 and beyond: CW requirement, CW path course (but not 300-level course or upper-level workshop), elective.
The English department highly recommends that students be enrolled in only one CW course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one CW course, the department requests that you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. By doing so you will be considerate of instructors and other students.
