At the height of European literary modernism in the 1920's, a series of novels set out to do the impossible: through new and complex innovations in narrative technique, they attempted to represent in its totality the modern, industrial, cosmopolitan city--the location of new and complex social configurations and individual experiences of time and space. We will examine several of these novels closely, focusing our attention on two important strategies of representation: first, the use of "stream-of-consciousness narration" to represent the often alienating individual experience of the city; and second, the adaptation of cinematic montage to represent the city as an organic whole existing outside the experience of any single resident. We will contextualize these strategies of representation through readings of early 20th century sociology, social psychology, and film theory, and through viewings of relevant films from the early Soviet and German cinemas. |
