This 0.25-credit course is open to students currently enrolled in MB&B/BIOL182 Principles of Biology II. The course is intended to supplement the introductory biology course at a more advanced level to provide a more challenging and enriching experience for students with strong backgrounds in biology (e.g., students who performed well in MB&B/BIOL181). Students will read recently published journal articles at the frontiers of physiology, development, evolution, and ecology. This course introduces students to current technologies and methods being used in the field to advance our understanding of life. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Readings will consist of data papers selected from recent scientific journals to highlight issues of current resonance. Examples may include: the physiology of animals adapted to extreme environments; the physiological basis for human diseases; ecology and evolution of infectious diseases; and ecological and evolutionary risks of genetically engineered crops.

Examinations and Assignments:
Two short class presentations of portions of research papers, submitting questions and comments on the papers, and class participation. |

For permission of instructor: Please provide via email to both sdevoto@wesleyan.edu and fcohan@wesleyan.edu any information that indicates the strength of your background in biology and the extent of your interest in a more challenging and enriching experience. Please also indicate the grade you received in Biol181 or other equivalent biology course.
Students should have a strong interest in the biological sciences and a desire to engage in discussions of original research.
Students will engage in discussion with fellow students and the professors in a small class setting. We will read and discuss recent journal articles that probe in greater depth some of the subjects covered in BIOL182. Weekly meetings will consist of a short lecture by the professor, a group presentation of a research paper, and class discussion of the readings. Students who enroll in BIOL194 should separately enroll in BIOL182. |
