Techniques of narrative journalism, with an emphasis on profile-writing as a means of powerful storytelling that captures both internal and external action. Weekly reading and writing assignments, resulting in each student's production of a narrative profile suitable for publication.
The course instructor will be Barbara Roessner, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Executive Editor of the Hearst CT Newspaper Group. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Readings will include magazine articles by Gay Talese, Joan Didion, Tom Wolfe and Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, as well as recently published narrative profiles in The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, Vanity Fair, The New York Times and other daily newspapers. Class discussion will include visits from working journalists who practice the narrative craft.

Examinations and Assignments: Early assignments explore techniques that are central to narrative journalism. Frequent short essays (1-5 pages) offer practice in establishing setting, character, plot movement, and dialog. Other exercises focus on interviewing skills. As a final project students write a longer profile and prepare it for publication. |
