The Intercultural Stage: Migration and the Performing Arts in the Hispanic World

Hybridity, heterogeneity, transnationalism, and interculturalism are just a few of the terms that have proliferated within the marketplace of ideas over the past several years as reflections, from within the field of critical theory, of one of the contemporary world's dominant social realities: the massive displacement of peoples across borders and the creation of constricted multicultural zones of interaction and conflict within the confines of single nations. The Spanish-speaking world has been affected by this phenomenon in particular ways, in both Spain and North America. In this course we will study how playwrights and stage artists--Spanish, Latin American (Mexican), and Latino--working in various genres, have responded to this reality, how and why they have chosen to craft the collective experience of the border as performance, and how they have attended to the cultural and political tensions that are associated with this experience.
The framework for our study will be comparative in both content and format. We will focus on two borders--the Straights of Gibraltar and the Río Grande--and on the two corresponding migratory experiences: North African and sub-Saharan migration into Europe (Spain); Latin American migration into the United States. This course will be taught in conjunction with a course offered simultaneously at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. When possible, classes will be linked through videoconferencing. Wesleyan students will collaborate with their Spanish peers on certain class projects. |

Major Readings:
- A collection of plays by Spanish, Mexican and Latino or Hispanic playwrights active in the United States.
- Audiovisual recordings of some performances will also be included.
- Essays and articles by Victor Turner, Richard Schechner and others whose writing spans the fields of theater criticism and anthropology and who write on the topic of interculturalism and performance.

- Weekly response papers and/or short critical analyses;
- Oral presentations
- A comprehensive final term paper (10 pages). |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Class discussion, written work and most readings in Spanish. SPAN258 is intended for students who have completed one advanced course in Spanish BEYOND the level of Spanish 221 with a grade of B or better.
After submitting an electronic POI request, send an email to agonzalez@wesleyan.edu listing the advanced-level courses you have taken in Spanish, with your grade. Include a paragraph (250 pages maximum), in Spanish, describing your cross-cultural experiences and explaining how you have benefited from them. Emails must be received by Noon Wednesday, November 13. Decisions will communicated by email by 5pm Friday, November 15. |
