Since theater is an art of collaboration, this course will offer advanced acting and directing students an opportunity to develop their skills in an ensemble environment and collaborate on the final presentation in the form of public performance. Students will be able to choose acting or directing concentration. Acting techniques will include intense work on one or two chosen characters, developing three-dimensionality of the part, performing in an ensemble, and Michael Chekhov's acting method. Directing techniques will focus on adaptation, production concept, and the orchestration of that concept in terms of research, work with actors, ground plan, set, lights, costumes, props, sound, etc.
Students will go through all stages of preparing a public performance: selecting the script, its analysis, adaptation, conceptualization through design elements, casting, rehearsing, collaboration with designers, and performing.
The course will fulfill an advanced directing requirement for students interested in pursuing senior theses in directing and offers an additional level of acting training to advanced acting students. |

Examinations and Assignments: Scenes and exercises to be rehearsed outside the class and presented weekly. Two Moodle responses to required reading. Final cumulative paper 15-20 pages long. Final performance. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students of the class will select one of the two concentrations - directing or acting. For the directing track, the additional prerequisite is THEA281 Directing I. For the acting track, an advanced acting class (for example, THEA285 Acting II) is highly recommended.
Admission is by audition/interview in the end of the fall semester; the dates and times TBA. Permission of instructor will be given during Drop/Add.
The course will fulfill an advanced directing prerequisite for students interested in pursuing a senior thesis in directing; it will serve as an equivalent of Directing II.
The class times are Tuesday 2:40-4:30 and Friday 1:10-4:00; all students are required to be available during both class sessions. Tuesday class is reserved for intensive acting work; Friday sessions will include ensemble presentations of work in progress and discussions with directing students.
Due to the intensive nature of the course and a heavy rehearsal load, students are strongly advised against making significant extracurricular commitments that may conflict with the class (for example, Second Stage productions), especially during the second half of the semester. |
