This course offers historical, theoretical, and empirical perspectives to the study of personal and collective violence and memory. We will examine the intersections of biography, history, and memory in popular culture and politics. The course focuses on issues around memory--from memorialization and truth commissions to memoir and PTSD. Our discussions will focus on personal and collective memory as social things that shape our understanding of the past and present, as well as our thinking about the future. |
