| Section:

This course explores how we think about the past collectively and personally. We will study what makes memory collective from a variety of perspectives including memorialization, memoir, biography, and the production of historical knowledge. We will also focus on the material and popular culture of memory, as well as the politics surrounding these cultures of memory. We will discuss struggles around how to remember and represent the past, including debates about memorials and monuments, and truth commissions. Our objective is to better understand how the past is constructed as a mix of truth, confession, and story that is meant to help anchor and orient us moving forward. |
