This course provides a critical and scholarly introduction to Northern European and Iberian art of the early modern period (1400-1700). Students will be introduced to the famed "Old Master" artists of the period and to a range of art historical methodologies, traditional and innovative, by which to evaluate their works. The Iberian Peninsula, Burgundian Lowlands, and central Europe were linked culturally, economically, and politically in the early modern period, and the establishment of overseas empires brought wealth and exotic goods to the continent. Artists thrived in the lands outside of Italy as art markets expanded, new genres arose to appeal to diversified audiences, and changes in religious belief and practices invigorated the market for devotional art. Add to this technical innovations such as the development of oil painting and introduction of canvas supports, and the stage was set for the emergence of the great masters whose works we will encounter in this course--including Rogier van der Weyden, Jan van Eyck, Pedro Berruguete, Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Dürer, Pieter Bruegel, Rembrandt, Velázquez, Vermeer, and Zurbarán. |
