In this class we will read classic novels and stories that present striking, unforgettable human beings. Our priorities will be close reading for the pleasure and enlightenment of the works as wholes, as well as an examination of the choices the writer has made to bring the character to life on the page. |

Course texts will include works by Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, Halldór Laxness, Thomas Mann, Herman Melville, Leo Tolstoy, Eudora Welty, and Virginia Woolf; as well as Icelandic Sagas.

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will keep a weekly reading journal, compose creative exercises, and write a full-length work of original short fiction. |

To apply for this course, please submit either 3-8 pages of creative writing or a statement of no more than 2 pages describing your interest in this course and any past history with creative writing.
