This class will take as its focus both creatively and critically the daily and episodic tracking of our own and others' insights, observations, inspirations, motivations; incidents and encounters that seem worthy of (personal) note, whether this be for instant gratification, imprint, or later expansion, simple records as well as flights of writing. We will read and keep journals of various kinds. Very little will be out of bounds. |

Major Readings:
Readings to include authors such as: Sei Shonagon, Virginia Woolf, Beat writers, George Oppen, Annie Ernaux, and Aaron Kunin.

Examinations and Assignments: Author presentations, weekly responses (including in-class sharing), occasional in-class writing, final paper. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students are also required to attend several events per semester with visiting writers (usually scheduled on Wednesday afternoons at 4:15 and evenings at 8:00 p.m.). To apply for this course, please submit either 3-8 pages of creative writing or a statement of no more than 2 pages describing your interest in this course and any past history with creative writing. The application deadline is Monday, November 4, 2013 at 9:00 a.m.. Please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to damartin@wesleyan.edu. Please use either Microsoft word or rich-text- format for your attachment. You will be notified electronically of the status of your application. If you are applying to more than one POI creative writing course, you must indicate your order of preference. Students may not take this course and another creative writing course concurrently.
