European Integration

GOVT 286
Fall 2013
Section: 01
Certificates: International Relations

Today's European Union is a study in contrasts. Since its creation in the Treaty of Paris in 1951, the EU has grown from a six-country coal and steel community into a policymaking behemoth whose 28 member states form the largest economy in the world. Along with an unprecedented degree of international integration, however, the Union now also faces growing skepticism from some of its oldest member states and a common-currency project in a state of apparently perpetual crisis. In this course, we will survey the history, theory, and institutions of European integration with an eye to analyzing the present and guessing the future of the EU. Why did the European Union come about? How does it operate? And what will remain of the European project twenty or fifty years from now?
