History and Theory

This seminar will explore the contemporary theory and philosophy of history, giving special attention to the publications of "History and Theory," the academic journal owned and edited by Wesleyan University faculty for the last 50 years. We might discuss such topics as the nature of historical truth; history as a science, with laws, and as an art, with style; the nature of historical time; gender history; agency and causation; history of the emotions; and history's moral imperatives. We will certainly give special attention to the nature and development of comparison and to theorists connected with Bielefeld University, such as Niklas Luhmann, Jörn Rüsen, Jürgen Kocka, and especially Reinhart Koselleck.
Other key figures discussed are likely to include R. G. Collingwood, Michel Foucault, Hayden White, Frank Ankersmit, Barbara Rosenwein, Joan Scott, Ian Hacking, and Quentin Skinner. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Course readings will include diverse articles and chapters from HISTORY AND THEORY and elsewhere, likely including those by the following authors. Readings will consist of approximately two articles, usually of 20-35 pages per week, generally accessible through the course moodle page or through library resources. There are no required book purchases.

Examinations and Assignments:
There will be two short and one longer paper required for the course. One paper will analyze a thematic debate, ne will attempt to produce an original critique, question, or solution, and the longer paper will be open, selected in consultation with the professor. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Steady attendance.
This course will be linked to a class taught by Professor Angelika Epple on a comparable subject at Bielefeld University in Germany. We shall have common readings and joint classes via a Skype-like link in April and May. We'll also use other forms of electronic communication to connect the US with the German class. The common readings and joint classes will operate in English. |
