Medicine in Ancient Greece & Rome
CCIV 128
Fall 2014
Section: 01   02

This course will examine Greek and Roman medical theories (450 BCE--300 CE), as well as other aspects of health and healing in antiquity, including the patient-practitioner relationship, epidemic and endemic diseases, and unhealthful urban living conditions. Alongside the evidence for the development of "rational" medicine, we will consider non-rational approaches, including magical healing spells, native folk remedies, polytheistic healing rituals, and early Christian beliefs.
