Art in a Mediated Landscape: Contemporary Issues of Art and the Environment

ENVS 295
Spring 2015
Section: 01
Certificates: Environmental Studies

This course is an interdisciplinary course that focuses on contemporary issues of art and the environment. Lectures, readings, and research will provide an overview of the history of cultures and artists working with the land as a medium, as well as contemporary artists that address human impacts of the environment.
Students will conduct research of ancient sites from Europe, South America, and North America and compare these sites with the Land Art movement of the 1960's and 70's. From this research students will develop a research paper and collaborative land art projects that engage the campus landscape and community. The second section of the course will examine contemporary artists whose work reflects notions of the Anthropocene. In response, students will create studio projects that seek to develop new ways of looking at the landscape using interdisciplinary approaches to art making. The course will cumulate with a portfolio of artworks organized in a hand made book project and a student led tour of a researched landscape that engages current environmental issues.
