We will study contemporary Caribbean, African diasporic, and Chicanx writers and artists to consider different codes, fashions, forms, shapes, and registers of queerness and anti-normativity in parts of the Caribbean and the U.S. We will consider the artists' and writers' various relationships to Blackness, whiteness, nonwhiteness, minoritarian positions, their mothers, the domestic, power, and other space-times (e.g., the club, dreams, hallucinations, travel) of being in relation to sexuality, gender, pleasure, and affect. |

Two short essays (may engage other media than writing by approval of Professor); 1 collaborative listening assignment; 1 research paper. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students applying to take the course will send an email to the professor and submit a short, two-page writing sample that represents their recent creative-critical work (the sample does not have to have a beginning, middle, and end--it can be a fragment). In their email of interest to which students attach this writing sample (as a Word document--no google links, please), state in just one paragraph what the stakes are of studying in this course. The deadline for receiving submissions is Monday, November 9, 2020 by 5 PM.
Classes of '21 & '22: This course fulfills the Literatures of Difference and Theory requirements and contributes to the American Lit and Race & Ethnicity concentrations of the English major.
Class of '23 and beyond: This course fulfills the American Lit and Theory requirements of the English major. |
