Writing the War on Terror: Crafting Literary Responses to Fiction, Film, and Television after 9/11

In this interdisciplinary, nonfiction writing seminar, students will work on writing book and film reviews, op-ed pieces, blogs, memoirs, and narrative non-fiction as they explore the ways contemporary literature and film have depicted the post-9/11 "War on Terror." They will watch documentaries by Laura Poitras, and Alex Gibney's We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks. They will read fiction by Mohsin Hamid, Elina Hirvonen, Deborah Eisenberg, and Martin Amis, and nonfiction prose by Dunya Mikhail, Pankaj Mishra, and George Packer. There will be a workshop component to this course. Students will focus on presenting their ideas in sophisticated, accessible prose, paying close attention to language, style, and syntax at the line and paragraph levels. |

Examinations and Assignments: Students will complete frequent short writing assignments that will be workshopped by their peers. They will write reviews, op-eds, blogs, memoir, and journalistic profiles. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students of all backgrounds are welcome in this course, but you should have taken at least one course in Creative Writing (Techniques, Workshops, or Special Topics, in any genre), OR have some other relevant background in the study of literature or history. To apply to this course, please submit 3 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably creative non-fiction). Please also submit a covering page that includes the following: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences; 2) a concise, well-written statement (1-2 paragraphs) describing your interest in this course, and your background in creative writing or other qualifications; 3) if you are applying to more than one POI creative writing course, you must indicate in list form your order of preference for those courses. The application deadline is Monday, April 6, 2015 at 9 a.m. Please submit this information electronically in a single attachment to hsawhney@wesleyan.edu using either Microsoft Word or rich-text-format. You will be notified electronically of the status of your application by the end of preregistration. (Students who have missed this deadline may submit materials to hsawhney@wesleyan.edu by August 27, 2015 at 5 p.m., in case there are any last-minute openings.
