Querying the Nation: American Literature and Ethnic Studies
ENGL 165
Spring 2017
Section: 01

This course poses the study of American literature as a way to explore issues of race and ethnicity in the U.S. From 1960s student strikes demanding ethnic studies courses in California to recent dismantlings of the field in some high schools and colleges, the role of ethnic studies in education has been a topic of heated debate. We will examine a range of multiethnic texts to understand how they have generated critical frameworks for cultural study that are attuned to the contradictions of various American ideals. Toward the end of the course, we will direct some of our energies to investigating how ethnic studies has circulated at Wesleyan.
