Developmental Tasks of Adolescence

Based on both clinical and developmental theory, this seminar is aimed at allowing students to master the primary intellectual and emotional tasks of adolescence through reading and group experience. We will ask what it means to have successfully individuated from family and explore how this need is expressed across four developmental domains--family, friends, fertility, and future--and how these milestones are evaluated and appraised. Students completing the course will be able to articulate why individuation and separation are essential to normal adult functioning and will also be able to develop summary statements that can be used to describe the level of functioning of an adolescent seeking therapy for a behavioral disorder. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Daily journal; questionnaire development for measuring individuation and separation in one domain (family, friends, fertility or future); one interview with an adult evaluating her/his movement through primary developmental tasks of adolescence; a final project in written, photographic, artistic, and/ or performance form. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This section is part of the Spring Intensive pilot program. Students who enroll in the program will take courses during spring 2016 one at a time, each during a three-week time period. This class will meet March 28 - April 1, 9 am - 4 pm, Monday through Friday.
Students interested in the program should contact Lisa Dierker, ldierker@wesleyan.edu. Selected students will be notified directly and will not need to participate in the pre-registration system.
Students will apply by completing a brief questionnaire examining their background and level of engagement with the material.
This course counts as an Elective towards the Psychology major. |
