The Films and Influences of Martin Scorsese
FILM 381
Spring 2023
Section: 01

Martin Scorsese: film historian and preservationist, documentarian, and student of the cinema who openly processes his influences into striking original work. Students will screen films like RAGING BULL, GOODFELLAS, and AFTER HOURS to develop their tools of film analysis. In tracing the career of a major formalist whose directorial style develops and evolves over time, students will engage with defining that work and the challenges it offers: the breadth of cinematic style and the push-and-pull around difficult, often violent, male protagonists. Please note: Scorsese's films are steeped in American cinema and culture, and deliberately confront viewers with characters defined by their sexism, racism, and violence.
