Examinations and Assignments: Students prepare pieces to be recorded and give demonstration performances. Those performances are critiqued and refined until they are ready to be recorded. At that point a recording session is scheduled and completed. The results of the session are critiqued as both a performance and as a sound object and students prepare a written document of specifying goals for subsequent recording (or overdubbing or remixing). This process continues iteratively until the full recording is completed. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The primary requirement is the ability to play at least twenty minutes of music at a high enough level of proficiency to warrant recording. Students that do not perform on an instrument are welcome to request a POI. Many successful studio personnel are not musicians or recording engineers and knowledge of Studio Musicianship is paramount in their effort to help in the creation of music in the studio. (Some of the best Producers that I have worked with fall into this category.)
While recording sessions are built into the course syllabus the class may require additional Recording Session labs that will be scheduled once the student groups are determined and students agree upon the lab time.
This class and recording sessions will take place at the Green Street Art Center Recording Studio, 51 Green Street, Middletown. Wesleyan University Transportation Services will provide transportation to GSAC from campus. Please contact the Music Department Office to find out the transportation arrangements.
The class provides 1/2 credit in the performance category but may be taken twice for credit. |
