The aim of this course is to provide an interdisciplinary examination of the complex array of social practices that have shaped the role of Africa and the African Diaspora in world history. The class will focus on both classic and modern texts that provide an introduction to the dynamics of African American and African Diaspora thought and practice. Topics include What is Africana Studies?, Black Studies to Africana Studies, Africa and the Origin of Civilization, Creating the African Diaspora, Transatlantic Slave Trade, Islamic Slave Trade, the Haitian Revolution, African Independence, the intersections of racism, Black Nationalism, and Black Feminism, the case for Reparations, and the Future of Africana Studies. |
