This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of writing short fiction in Spanish and will enhance their knowledge of the Spanish language through the reading of great short stories that will inform students' own writing and the development of a personal style. We will examine essential features of fiction (methods of constructing narrative tension, climax, ambiguity, character, different kinds of autobiographies and descriptions, dialogues, and monologues), as well as various fictional styles through the texts of masters such as Julio Ramón Ribeyro, Cristina Sánchez Andrade, Valle-Inclán, Julio Cortázar, and Jorge Luis Borges, among others. |

Short stories and novel excerpts by Julio Ramón Ribeyro, Cristina Sánchez Andrade, Fernando Vallejo, Valle-Inclán, Julio Cortázar, Jorge Luis Borges, Sergio Chejfec, Silvina Ocampo, Cervantes and Horacio Quiroga among others.

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Requirements: at least SPAN 221 with a minimum of B+. Priority will be given to HISP majors and students who have studied abroad in a Spanish-speaking country, but all are encouraged to apply. To apply, send a writing sample of 2 pages of fictional writing in Spanish, as well as a note indicating year/major, your favorite books/writers, and the reasons why you want to take this course to dsoutoalcald@wesleyan.edu. Reading and writing are the best ways for adult learners to improve their spoken Spanish. You will therefore improve all of your language skills in this course. |
