Writing the Moving Image: Crafting Visual Stories
FILM 105
Spring 2023
| Section:

|
Designed for first-year students, this course is an introduction to some of the core fundamentals of visual storytelling through an exploration of coming-of-age films. How do characters' emotional worlds guide their actions? How are characters informed by and created by the places they inhabit? How is a scene the building block-as well as a microcosm-for a film as a whole? Through close study and analysis of a wide variety of short and feature-length coming-of-age films, weekly writing assignments, and in-class writing workshop sessions, students will explore the power and possibilities of story craft and learn how to write 12-minute short film loglines, synopses, outlines, and screenplays. Students should expect to spend several hours per week outside of class reading, writing, and watching films. Over the course of the semester students will present works in progress, participate in constructive critical discussions, offer weekly editorial feedback to their peers, and develop a portfolio of original writing. |
