This course may be repeated for credit. |
Contemporary dance technique is a creative practice focused on the embodied research of momentum, precision, spatial awareness, musicality and rhythm, efficiency, boundless movement, collaboration, and joyful dancing. In this class, Xan Burley and Alex Springer will share movement material that activates the body through improvisation, technical exercises, partnering, and choreographed phrase work. Often we will work with flow, utilizing ongoing-ness to generate heat and improvisation to access the sensing self. Technical exercises engage with momentum as a tool for both precise balance and fluid abandon. We will refine our capacity for efficient full-bodied movement, our stamina, and our collaborative potential. Phrasework will be athletic, virtuosic, detailed, and empowering. We will draw upon our own movement research as longtime collaborators and our histories as performers and teachers with Doug Varone and Dancers. Some experience with dance and a desire to be challenged will be important prerequisites. |
