This course is designed to teach potential lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The first class of each quarter will meet in the lobby of Freeman Athletic Center. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Prerequisites: The Minimum age for participation is 15.Participants must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only legs. Participants cross their arms across their chest. Participants must swim 300 yards (12 lengths) continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing without stopping. There is no time requirement for this swimming test. Prospective participants must swim either front crawl or breaststroke, but not backstroke or sidestroke. Goggles may be used. Participants must complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, do a surface dive to a depth of 10 feet, retrieve a 10 lb. object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point on your back with the object in your hands. Once back to the starting point, place 10 lb. object on the deck and then exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Goggles may not be used. This is NOT a swimming class. You must have the appropriate skills and endurance before the class begins. Following the swimming test, students with poor swimming skills and/or endurance will be advised of their deficiencies, and told their chances of being certified are not good. |
