This course is an intermediate-level playwriting workshop. We will examine plays that use different dramaturgical strategies to grapple with, question, and invigorate the historical record, including Miller's The Crucible, Jacob Jenkins's An Octaroon, Miranda's Hamilton, and Shakespeare's histories. We will then write original plays that spring from, react to, and grapple with the past as it's been told and hidden from telling. In addition to numerous short exercises, students will research and write a 40-page history play. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will write a series of creative reading responses, and a number of 10-page playwriting assignments. The final project will include researching and writing a first and second draft of a 40-page history play. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Submit a 5-page playwriting sample.
This course contributes to the Creative Writing concentration of the English major as a Special Topics course as well as the Theory & Literary Forms concentration.
For the Writing Certificate, this course counts as an elective course with workshop component. |
