Seminar on Television Series and Aesthetics
FILM 387
Fall 2020
| Section:
01
|
Through frequent viewing of episodes, classroom discussion, and written exercises, students will consider television programs over multiple seasons and series as they work to describe and differentiate models of television series construction. Of primary interest is the creative decision making that goes into creating this commercial art form--recognizing patterns of intention, choice, and effect; how these operate on a variety of scales; and what attitudes a program may manifest toward the medium and the viewer. Series viewed may include I LOVE LUCY, THE PRISONER, ATLANTA, THE X-FILES, BROAD CITY, and others, including student-generated selections. |

SECTION 01 |
Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
This is not a reading course but a seminar in aesthetics and analysis. 5-7 hours of viewing are required outside of class each week.
|
Examinations and Assignments: Students will be expected to participate weekly in text-based Moodle discussion boards.
There will still be written papers assigned across the course of the semester, although the intention is to keep these on the shorter side
There will be no in-class screenings. Students will be responsible for asynchronously keeping up with assigned viewing via home streaming, using a combination of Moodle and commercial streaming platforms (e.g. Netflix, Hulu).
|
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Attendance at all class meetings is required.
One class meeting per week will be synchronous for the entire class. Students will be able to choose to attend in person or to connect via Zoom. This meeting will be lecture-based, with room for questions/discussion. Since no material will be screened, this full-class meeting will not run for the entirety of the allotted three hour time slot.
For the second class meeting each week, students will be divided into smaller discussion groups to meet separately with the instructor during scheduled class time. The number and schedule of groups will be determined during the first week of the semester, but the intention is to group students according to their preferred means of interaction ¿ e.g. an in-person group meets at 8:50am, a Zoom-only group meets at 9:50am, etc.
Naturally, these meeting protocols are subject to change depending upon the health of students, the instructor, and the larger community. |
