This course will provide a hands-on introduction to design and engineering. Students will engage in individual and team projects in a studio environment where we seek to develop a shared practice and understanding of the engineering design process. We will study biological organisms to find inspiration for design of hoppers, swimmers, and climbers. Students will build skills using computer-aided design (CAD) software and using tools for fabrication and prototyping including laser cutting and 3D printing. We will also hone skills in identifying which scientific and engineering principles need to be understood to achieve design goals. |

You do not need a strong background in mechanics or engineering to receive permission to enroll in the course, as it is an intro-level course. Your responses to the IDEA170 POI Response Form (link found below) are used to ensure the classroom community is built with a diversity of prior experience and interests in design. Students will be expected to attend a small number of course meetings/activities outside of normal class times.
For your POI request application to be considered:
1. Submit your POI request(s) through WesPortal for your preferred section(s) of IDEA170
2. Submit a new/updated entry for the upcoming semester to the IDEA170 POI Response Form found at the following link: https://forms.office.com/r/d9Azubwumf
POI Deadlines, Approval and Waitlist
- Submit your POI request and Form responses by 8am on the last Friday of the pre-registration planning period for full consideration
- Initial enrollment approvals will be granted by 8am on the last Monday of the pre-registration planning period
- To remain on the general waitlist, keep your POI request in WesPortal active for the appropriate section(s). To be removed from the general waitlist, delete your POI request in WesPortal.
- Priority waitlist students will be contacted by email directly during the adjustment period (by Monday AM for current students; by Wednesday AM for incoming first years during summer) |
