Writing between Cultures: German Literature and Film by Authors of Foreign Descent
GRST 335
Spring 2022 not offered
Crosslisting: COL 353

This seminar will introduce students to both literary texts and films by immigrants or descendants of immigrants, all of whom write in German, whether as their first or second language. Among the topics we will explore are homesickness, interactions with bureaucracy, use of and perspectives on language, questions of citizenship and identity, assimilation and integration, cultural misunderstandings, and encounters with bigotry and xenophobia. We will discuss works by Yoko Tawada, Aras Ören, Rafik Schami, Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Wladimir Kaminer, Vladimir Vertlieb, Saša Stanišic, and others as we consider what properties make their works part of the canon of German literature, or not. Films by Fatih Akin and Yasemin Samdereli are also included in this course.
