Working with actors is an essential component of cinema and television. This workshop course leads students through the analysis of screen performance, introduces the craft of staging dramatic scenes for single-camera shooting, and offers a practicum on working with actors to shape performance for the camera. It will center on how to work with actors so that the dramatic function of a scene is fulfilled. The course's guiding questions are: How does the scene function in the story? How do you cast it? What point does the scene need to make? How do you speak with an actor in terms they can play so that the essence of the scene is successfully conveyed? |

Students should be prepared to familiarize themselves with a dozen or so plays and will be asked to select scenes for their work in class.

This is a workshop course. Grading is based on in-class work, development of original scenes, and participation in collaborative exercises. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This workshop course is especially valuable for students who plan to undertake a senior film-making thesis and it requires intensive collaboration.
Professor Scott Higgins will be granting POIs for this course but is not the instructor for the class. |
