This course introduces students to major developments in British and Irish history from the seventeenth century to the present, from the British Civil War through Brexit and its aftermath. Drawing on primary and archival sources, historical scholarship, literature, film, and television, students will examine British and Irish culture and society while considering the relationship between historical realities and their representation in academic and popular memory. Novels ranging from Jane Austen¿s Pride and Prejudice and Charles Dickens¿s Hard Times to films and series such as Elizabeth (1998), My Beautiful Laundrette (1984), Michael Collins (1996), The King¿s Speech (2010), and Downton Abbey (2010-2015) will provide additional perspectives on Britain¿s and Ireland¿s past. Core academic texts will include: Barczewski, Britain Since 1688: A Nation in the World; Schama, The Fate of Empire, 1776-2000; and Fintan O'Toole, The Politics of Pain. Students will develop foundational skills in historical research, analysis, discussion, and presentation, with attention to transatlantic connections between London and New England, Anglo-American law, visual culture, empire, and the role of new technologies in historical study and education.
